NSCC

The National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) was established pursuant to the National Citizens Centre Act 2017 with mandate to identify the needs of senior citizens and to cater for them. It is the first distinct national corporate body with focus on social inclusion of senior citizens in sustainable development and the improvement of the quality of living and well-being for self-fulfilment.

NSCC is to identify opportunities for trainings to enhance capacities of senior citizens, initiate, facilitate and implement educational, health and social programs, productive activities and work schemes in order to provide income or otherwise supplement earnings of senior citizens. NSCC is to also ensure, the provision of recreation, sports and counselling programs, all aiming to enhance, dignity, independence, security and care of Nigeria’s senior citizens.

NSCC MANDATE

1. Identify the needs, trainings, and opportunities of senior citizens in the country and be responsible for the provision of recreational, sports, educational, health and social programs and facilities designed for the full enjoyment and benefit of the senior citizens in the country as well as provide guidance and counselling for senior citizens.
2. Initiate, develop and implement productive activities and work schemes for senior citizens in order to provide income or otherwise supplement their earnings.
3. Promote and maintain linkages with State and local governments services, facilities, professional advice services and training.
4. Identify the needs, trainings, and opportunities of senior citizens in the country and be responsible for the provision of recreational, sports, educational, health and social programs and facilities designed for the full enjoyment and benefit of the senior citizens in the country as well as provide guidance and counselling for senior citizens.
5. Initiate, develop and implement productive activities and work schemes for senior citizens in order to provide income or otherwise supplement their earnings.
6. Promote and maintain linkages with State and local governments services, facilities, professional advice services and training.
7. Keep records and statistics of senior citizens in the country as well as liaise with national, regional and international agencies involved in the provision of welfare and recreational activities for senior citizens.
8. Perform such other functions which are necessary to achieve out the purpose for which the centres are established.

VISION: An inclusive society where every older person can live a dignified, healthy, happy and secured life to the fullest with opportunity to continue to participate in what they value and to access appropriate care in a place of their choice.

MISSION: To engage strategic multi-sectoral partnerships and data application to identify needs of older persons and initiate, facilitate and effectively coordinate programmes and services to carter for the needs of older persons and improve the quality of life and wellbeing of older persons while promoting intergenerational synergies and economic growth opportunities.

OVERALL GOAL: To improve the quality of life and wellbeing of older persons in Nigeria for enhanced self-fulfilment.

PRIORITY AREAS

1. Income Security

• Reduce poverty and vulnerability of Senior citizens by creating opportunities for engagement in livelihood programs and public work schemes for income.
• Accelerate inclusion of poor and vulnerable senior citizens in National and States Social Safety-Net programs.
• Accelerate inclusion of senior citizens in National Social Investment programs.

2. Promote Health and Wellbeing.

• Facilitate increased access to quality, affordable, appropriate, and acceptable health and Social Care for Senior Citizens at all levels.
• Accelerate senior citizens’ social inclusion, participation and social connections through active Senior Centres.

3. Engagement of Capacities of Senior Citizens

• Enhance social inclusion by providing platforms for utilizing skills, experiences and resources of senior citizens for community development through volunteerism or for supplemental income.

4. Promote Fundamentals change in perception of ageing and old age

• Accelerate high level advocacy and public sensitization for positive change in perception of ageing and old age.
• Accelerate Advocacy for mental health through a multi- sectoral community based Elder Abuse Prevention and Rapid Response and Remedy Mechanism.

5. Facilitate progressive registration of senior citizens to enable access to age friendly services, supportive environments. discounts and courtesies
