The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) was established by Decree No. 29 on the 26th of June, 1992, as the federal government body with oversight function for Primary Health Care (PHC) development in Nigeria. Although the NPHCDA has no direct role in the provision of PHC services, it represents the Federal Government’s support to PHC through the development of human resources for PHC models, mobilization of resources, setting of standards and guidelines, supportive supervision monitoring and evaluation, and provision of immunization services, amongst other activities. We provide a network of services, benefits, and resources to empower the healthcare community in Nigeria to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of primary health care delivery. We aim to create healthy communities across Nigeria and make health and wellbeing a priority for everyone, especially the most vulnerable (source: www.hmpi.org).
Goals of NPHCDA (Core Values)
- Control Preventable Diseases
- Eradicate polio and limit the occurrence and impact of preventable diseases using education, immunization, and other proven interventions.
- Improve Access to Basic Health Service
- Making basic health services available and ensuring that communities have access to health facilities, services and basic health insurance.
- Improve Quality of Care
- Ensure basic health services that are people oriented and delivered according to established quality standards and protocols.
- Develop High-Performing Health Workforce
Workforce Organize system and structures to deliver effective support services through, Primary Health Care guidelines, norms and enabling Acts for States and LGAS.
Strengthen The Institution
Strengthen Zonal structures, State representation, internal communications, monitoring and evaluation, procurement and the financial management system.
Strengthen Partnerships
Mobilize and coordinate stakeholders such as Ministries, Departments, Agencies and development Partners to support the implementation of Primary Health Care (PHC).
Strengthen Community Engagement
Promote Community participation, ownership, and responsibility for health through Ward Development Committees and communication programmes.
