The National Boundary Commission (NBC) was first established by the National Boundary Commission Act., Chapter 238 of 1987. That Act has now been repealed and is now replaced by the National Boundary Commission (Establishment) Act, 2006.
Mandate: The mandate of the Commission is to determine, intervene and deal with any boundary dispute that may arise internally within Nigeria and internationally between Nigeria and any of her neighbours with a view to settling such disputes.
Vision: The vision of the Commission is to make boundaries easily identifiable for ease of administration and good neighbourliness amongst border communities, as well as the promotion of Trans-border Cooperation.
Mission: The mission of the Commission is prompt and effective management of Nigeria’s internal and international boundaries.
Functions:
The functions of the Commission as provided in part II Sections 7 (a to q) of the Establishment Act, 2006 include, among other things:
- to intervene and deal with any boundary dispute that may arise between Nigeria and any of her neighbours with a view to settling the dispute;
- to intervene, determine and deal with any boundary dispute that may arise among States, Local Government Areas or Communities in the Federation with a view to settling the disputes;
- to define and delimitate boundaries between States, Local Government Areas or Communities in the Federation, and between Nigeria and her neighbors in accordance with delimitation instruments or documents established for that purpose;
- to monitor trans-border relations between Nigeria and her neighbors with a view to detecting areas of tension and possible conflict;
- to promote trans-border cooperation and border region development;
- to facilitate equitable utilization of shared border resources;
- to formulate policies and programmes on internal and international (land and maritime) boundaries; and,
- to advise the Federal Government on matters affecting Nigeria’s border with any neighbouring country”.
